A motor operates in two modes

1. motoring mode

2. bracking mode

In motoring mode , motor converts electrical energy to mechanical energy, which supports is motion. In bracking mode, motor works as a generator converting mechanical energy to electrical Energy and thus oppose the motion. Motor can provide motoring and braking operations for both forward and reverse directions. A motor drive capable of operating in both directions of rotation and of producing both motoring and regeneration is called a four quadrant variable speed drive.
