ভারতের সংবিধানের 54 ও 55 ধারায় পরোক্ষ পদ্ধতিতে রাষ্ট্রপতি নির্বাচন হয় । গণপরিষদে অনেকেই প্রত্যক্ষ পদ্ধতিতে রাষ্ট্রপতি নির্বাচনের পক্ষে মত প্রকাশ করেছিলেন । কিন্তু সরাসরি জনগণের কাছে রাষ্ট্রের প্রধানকে ভোট প্রার্থী প্রতিপন্ন করার সিদ্ধান্ত যুক্তিযুক্ত বা সম্মানজনক বলে সমীচীন হয়নি ।
