    (a)  What are amides ?  Distinguish between amomfication and denitrification.

    (b)  Briefly state the antagonism of ions and a balanced solution.

    (c)  What are trace and tracer elements' ?  State briefly.

    (d)  Point out the differences between photosynthesis and bacterial photosynthesis.

    (e)  Explain why transpiration is called a 'necessary evil'.

    (f)  What do you mean by endogenous rhythm and cicardian rhythm ?

    (a)  What is plankton ?  How does it differ from pleuston ? 

    (b)  What are different consumers ?  Delineate the relationship between food web and food chain.

    (c)  What are renewable and non-renewable resources ?  State briefly the concept of conservation.

    (d)   Refer any one of the following to its habitat and mention its adaptive features:

           (i) Orchid,   (ii) Water hyacinth,

    (c)  What is biomass ?  State its role as the source of energy.

    (f)   What is meant by a plant community ?  How does it originate in a particular area ?

    (a)  Distinguish between a structural homozygote and a structural heterozygote. How viable gametes are formed in the latter ?

    (b)  Discuss why prokaryotic origin is suggested for mitochondria and chloroplasts.

    (c)  Why chloroplast is regarded as an autonomous organelle ? 

    (d)  What are Jifterent types of RNA ?  Mention their important functions only.

    (e)   Explain why

          (i) segregation is more important than independent assortment,

          (ii) hypoploidy is difficult to study in diploid organisms.

    (f)  What is meant by tautomeric shift? State the phenomena dominance and epistasis.

     (a)  Refer the following plants to their respective families and mention their useful parts and economic importance:

           (i) Sesamum indicum,    (ii) Carum curvi,     (iii) Piper nigrum and    (iv) Santalum album.

     (b)  Give the scientific name of plant yielding

            (i) camphor,    (ii) citrunella,    (iii) reserpine and     (iv) fenugreek Mention the families to which they belong and nature of the product.

     (c)  Mention the scientific name and family of the plant species that yield tea of commerce. Give a brief account of the method of its cultivation.

     (d)  Name a sugar yielding plant. Give its scientific name with family and state the method of cultivation

     (e)  Give the scientific names of a rubber yielding plant and a timber yielding plant. Mention their families and nature of the useful parts.

     (f)  What is meant by bast fibre? Give scientific names and families of two plant species that yield bast fibre.

    (a)  What do you mean by denaturation and renaturation of DNA ?  How are these helpful in establishing relationship among different organisms ?

    (b)  What are cytokinius ?  How do they differ from other growth substances ?

    (c)  Name the different types of water present in the soil. What is a physiologically dry soil ?

    (d)  Why the decapitated coleoptile tip does not move towards the light? What do you mean by Pr and Pfr ?

    (e)  What are ribosomes and polyribosomes? Compare the ribosomes in prokaryotes with those in eukaryotes.

    (f)  Distinguish between

         (i) nucleotide and nucleoside and    (ii) conservative and semiconservative replication of DNA.

    (a) What are C3, and C4, plants ?  Which of these two is more efficient and why ? 

    (b) What is photo-oxidation ?   How does it differ from respiration ?

    (c) What are apoenzyme and coenzyme ? Name one coenzyme which helps in amino acid metabolism. What is the initiation codon of protein synthesis ?

    (d) Define bioremediation. State briefly its role in removal of environmental pollution. 

    (e) What is meant by short rotation energy farm ?  Mention its advantages,

    (f) What is green revolution ?  Discuss briefly the role of agriculture and aquaculture in food conservation.

    (a) What is cytoplasmic inheritance ?  How can we say that a particular inheritance is cytoplasmic ami not genetic ?  Distinguish between plasmids and episomes.

    (b) Who are the proponents of Operon concept ?  How docs enzyme synthesis occur under genetic regulation ?

   (c) What is synthetic theory ?  Do you think it more acceptable than other theories' ?  Justify your answer.

   (d)  Discuss how does allopolyploidy play more important role in evolution than autopoiyploidy.

   (e)  State various prospects of biotechnological applications in numan welfare

   (f)  What is meant by linkage group ?  Distinguish between coupling and repulsion phases of linkage. State criss cross inheritance.

    (a) Closely examine the relationships among ecosystem, biosphere and ecological niche. What are the sources of energy in the biosphere ?

    (b) Give the scientific name of "Chirata". Mention the family to which it belongs. What are the medicinal uses of this plant ?  Name the main active principles of chirata.

   (c)  Refer the following plants to their respective families and briefly slate their economic importance mentioning the nature of the plant parts used:

        (i) Elettaria cardamomum:    (ii) Azadirachta indica;     (in) Cannabis sativa;    (iv) Trichosanthes dioica.

    (d)  What is glyoxalate cycle ?  Where does this cycle occur and how accumulation of sugars in fatty seeds is accomplished through this cycle ?

    (e)  Delineate the relation between fannentation and anaerobic respiration.

    (f)  Distinguish between transcription and translation. State briefly the different stages of translation.
