হরপ্পা সভ্যতা ছিল এক বিশাল প্রাণবন্ত সভ্যতা এবং এই প্রাণবন্ত সভ্যতা কি কারণে বিলুপ্ত হয়েছিল, তা সঠিক ভাবে জানা যায় না । দীর্ঘ ছয়শো বছর উজ্জ্বল ও প্রাণবন্ত অস্তিত্বের পর আনুমানিক খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব ১৭৫০ অব্দের কিছুকাল পরে এই সভ্যতার অবসান ঘটেছিল একথা সর্বজনস্বীকৃত ।
