1.  What do you understand by the de-industrialization of India during the nineteenth century ? Explain its underlying causes and overall impact on the economic development of the country.    4+8+8

 

2.  What are the factors that have been said to be responsible for the frequency of famines even after the development of railways in British India ?    20

 

3.  Describe the development of the Jute Industry in India and discuss the problems faced by it at different stages of its growth.     20

 

4.  Do you agree to the viewpoint that railway development was an all powerful agent in the promotion of the material and social advancement of the people of India ?  Give reasons for your answer.    20

 

5.  Examine the different measures that have been adopted in the  Indian economy in the post reform (1991) period for improving the performance of the public sector.    20

6.  Discuss the problems faced by Indian Nationalized Banks in recent years with special reference: to capital adequacy, ratio and non-performing assets.     20

 

7.  Discuss the what ways the conflict between growth and equity has been attempted to be solved in different Indian plans.    20

 

8.  Critically examine the recommendations of the Chelliah Committee for widening India's tax structure and improving its efficiency.
