Geology is the science of Earth. In modern times, geology is commercially important for mineral and hydrocarbon exploration, evaluating water resources, is publicly important for predicting and understanding natural hazards, understanding and re-mediating environmental problems, and understanding past climate change, plays an essential role in geotechnical engineering, and is a major academic discipline.

 

Courses
Courses in geology and geography are available at the bachelor's degree, post-graduate degree and research degree levels.

 

At the bachelor's degree level, geology and geography are offered as one of the combinations by a number of universities. Some graduation courses do offer specialization in topics as applied geology, biogeography, cartography, marine-geology and remote sensing.

 

At the Master's degree level courses in specially areas are offered by a small number of institutions. The specialised branches include earth sciences (geology and geography). There are numerous sub-disciplines in the field of Geology such as Mineralogy, Oceanography, MarineGeology, Petroleum Geology, Paleontology, Seismology, Volcanology, Hydrology, Hydrogeology and Meteorology.
The Osmania University has introduced a three-year B.Sc. (Vocational) degree course in Geo-exploration. Programmes in geology are offered by national institutions like IIT-Kharagpur, BHU Institute of Technology, Varanasi and School of Mines, Dhanbad.

 

Eligibility
Plus Two is the basic qualification for Degree courses.

 

Admission
Selection is on the basis of merit ie, marks obtained in qualifying examination. But admission to NT is through Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
