1. a) Write a letter to a noted doctor whose practice is outside your city describing the nature of your ailment and seeking an appointment with him at his earliest convenience (write the letter within 150 word and use X, Y, Z instead of name and address) 40

b) Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper expressing your anxiety and concern about the increasing exodus of bright students from your country seeking academic and career opportunities elsewhere adding a suggestion on how this tendency may be arrested.

2. Draft a report (within 200 words) on shifting the city-zoo to a suitable place outside the metropolis. 40
3. Write a composition on any one of the following topics :- 40
(a) Noise ;

4. Write a precis of the following passage and add a suitable title :- 40
The balance of nature is a very elaborate and very delicate system of checks and counter-checks. It is continually being altered as climate change, as new organism evolve, as animals or plants permeate to new areas. But the alterations have in the past, for the most part, been slow, whereas with the arrival of civilized man, their speed has been multiplied manifold.
Everywhere man is altering the balance of nature. He is facilitating the spread of plants and animals into new regions, sometimes deliberately, sometimes unconsciously. He is covering huge areas with new kinds of plants or with houses, factories, slag-heaps and other products of his civilization. He exterminates some spaces on a large scale, but favours the multiplication of others. In brief, he has done more in five thousand years to alter the biological aspects of the planet than has nature in five million. (145 words)
5. Translate any one of the following passage into English : 40
a) ১৯১৪ : প্রথম বিশ্বযুদ্ধ তখন তুঙ্গে । ফ্রান্সের সীমান্ত ফ্লান্ডার্সে, বিস্তৃত বার্লি ও শালগম ক্ষেতের মাঝে ছিল যাকে বলা হত নো ম্যানস ল্যান্ড । আর সেই নো ম্যানস ল্যান্ডেই সে বার বড়দিনে অদ্ভুত এক কান্ড দেখল গোটা বিশ্ব । বড়দিনে এক রকম যুদ্ধবিরতি ঘোষিত হল । ইংল্যান্ড ও জার্মানি দুই পক্ষের সেনা নিজ ট্রেঞ্চ থেকে বেরিয়ে এল । দুই যুযুধান পক্ষের ওই সম্মুখসমরের মাঝমধ্যিখানে আচমকা এক ইংরেজ সেনা বের করে ফেললেন একটি ফুটবল । এর পরেই বদলে গেল গোটা আবহ,সহসা । বারুদগন্ধ মাঝে জাগিয়ে তোলা হল ফুলের আবহ । ওই সুবর্ণগোলক ! দুই পক্ষ তৎক্ষণাৎ দল গড়ে একটি প্রাণখোলা ফুটবল খেলায় মগ্ন হল । তার পর এমন অনেকগুলিই খেলা হয়েছিল, কিন্তু এই প্রথম বেড়াভাঙ্গা আজও ইতিহাস ।
b) একবিংশ শতকে পদার্পণের পর প্রায় দু'দশক অতিক্রান্ত । ভারতীয় বিজ্ঞানের সাফল্য সাহিত্য শিল্প আধুনিকতা পিছনে ফেলে উত্তরাধুনিকতার দিকে নাকি ধাবমান । কিন্তু ভারতের সামাজিক মনোবৃত্তির গতি প্রকৃতির একটি সাম্প্রতিক সমীক্ষায় যে ছবি প্রতীয়মান তা উদ্বেগজনক । পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সহ ছ'টি রাজ্যে কিশোরদের মধ্যে করা একটি সাম্প্রতিক সমীক্ষার ফলাফল জানাচ্ছে ৫৯ শতাংশ কিশোরের বিশ্বাস গেরস্থালি সামলানোই মেয়েদের যোগ্য কাজ, ৫৪ শতাংশের ধারণা বাড়ির শেষ সিদ্ধান্তের মালিক হওয়া উচিত ছেলেদেরই, ৩১ শতাংশ মনে করেন ভার্ৎসনার জন্য মেয়েদের চপেটাঘাত করা যেতেই পারে এবং প্রতি তিনজন কিশোরের মধ্যে এক জনের মত, ধর্ষণের পরিস্থিতি তৈরি করে মহিলারাই । সমীক্ষাটির এই ফলাফলে যা সবিশেষ উদ্বেগের বিষয় তা হল প্রাচীনতায় আক্রান্তদের বয়স ১৫ থেকে ১৮ র মধ্যে , অর্থাৎ যারা ভবিষ্যতের প্রাপ্তবয়স্ক নাগরি , যাদের উপর ন্যাস্ত সমাজের অগ্রগতির ভার ।
