Answer any three questions

 

1.   What is the lowest limit to which a river can erode ?   How can a mature and graded river become rejuvenated ?    Explain the origin of entrenched meanders giving examples.     5+10+5

 

2.   What are the Chernozem soils ?    Where are they best developed and why ?   Describe the Chernozem soil profile mentioning the natural vegetation of this soil.     4+8+8

 

3.   Discuss the origin and development of tropical cyclones.  Discuss the meteorological conditions causing a severe cyclonic storm 'Aila' over the districts of South Bengal in May 2009 and impact of this storm on human life and property.     10+10

 

4.  What is food chain ?   How does it originate ?   Identify four trophic levels of a food chain.   Discuss the functional relationship between different trophic levels in an eco system.     2+3+5+10

 

5.  Write short notes on any two of the following :

      (a-)  Weathering and soil profile.

      (b)   Sources of air pollution and Green House gases.

      (c)   Glacio-fluvial Deposits.

     (d)   Asthenosphere and Mohorovicic Discontinuity.      10+10

Answer any two questions.

 

6.   Specify the problems of industrialization in West Bengal in recent years.  Discuss the impact of globalization on industrial profile of India.     10+10

 

7.   Critically examine the Concept of Central Place Theory and comment on its applicability.      15+5

 

8.   Give a brief account of the geographical distribution of petroleum resources of the world.   Discuss in this connection the geo-political significance of the Middle East Oilfields.      10+10

 

9.   Write short notes on any two of the following :

     (a)  Distinguish between 'Possibilism' and "Determinism.

     (b)  Why Humboldt is regarded as 'Father of modern geography" ?

     (c)   Problems of agriculture in India.

     (d)   Define Behavioural Geography and Humanistic Geography.     10+10
