Library Science

 

Library is the abode of books. Library science is the study of issues related to libraries. But in this cyber centred world of today, libraries are not limited to books. The new era has widened the horizon of library science. It now deals with knowledge management - e-books, video and audio tapes, CDs and DVDs, internet and so on.

Library and information science is both an academic discipline and a professional course. It includes academic studies regarding how library resources are used and how people interact with library systems. Practical observation and experimental studies also form part of ft. Library science is a much sought after course in India.
The training includes the library organisation, library administration, classification theory and practice, cataloguing, physical bibliography and selection of book.

 

There are various levels of courses in India:

 

Certificate course: Duration of the course is 3 to 6 months. If you have passed Higher secondary or equivalent, you are eligible to apply.

 

Diploma course (DLSc): Course duration is 6 months to I year. You can apply if you passed 10+2. But some institutions admit only graduates.

 

Bachelor of library science (BLSc) or Bachelor of library and information science (B LISc) : This course is open only to graduate. Duration is generally one year.

 

Master of library and information science (MLISc): If completed BLISc or BLSc, you are eligible to apply. Course duration is 1 to 2 year

 

M Phil and PhD programmes are also offered by many universities.
Many Universities offer correspondence courses in library science at various levels.
