Due to advancements in medicine, better living standards and collapse of joint families, the number of senior citizens needing care and assistance is increasing by the day.
Traditional hospitals are designed to provide treatment to acute medical conditions and diseases. They are geared to provide care and assistance to elderly people who I need care and not a cure.
With the emergence of nuclear families with working couples, there has emerged a strong need for a large paid workforce to take care of the aged and elderly.
Course
PG Diploma/Certificate Courses in Geriatric Care
Geriatrics, an emerging branch of medicine, deals with the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses due to ageing. Geriatric care, on the other hand, deals with the planning and coordinating the care of the elderly to improve their quality of life and to maintain their independence for as long as possible. It includes both health care and psychological care.
Duration: 6 months
Eligibility
Courses in geriatric services are suitable for doctors, nursing staff, and paramedical support staff and social workers who want to work in the area of geriatric care.
Qualifications
- a) MBBS or any other degree in any branch of medicine
- b) A Degree in Physiotherapy
- c) A Degree/ Diploma in Nursing or any other paramedical subjects
- d) A degree in Social Work (BSW, MSW) or equivalent qualifications
Course Contents
The course covers subjects like Social Gerontology, Basic Geriatrics, Applied Geriatrics and Geriatric Nursing, besides Geriatric Counseling and Guidance, Rehabilitation and Project work.
