Besides foreign language skills, an aspirant should have exposure to cultures and customs of other countries.

When language becomes a barrier or hurdle to communication, the services of a translator or interpreter are sought, Translators and interpreters help exchange .  of ideas between people of different languages and cultures.
Translators largely deal with written text, while interpreters deal with inter-personal communication. Translators are hired to translate communications (emails, reports, etc) between people in companies, government, etc. Interpreters are hired to facilitate dialogue between people who cannot speak the same language.
Interpreters work at offices, boardrooms, business meetings, conferences and workshops where translations are needed. Their work is done under a great deal of pressure. Translators usually work in libraries or quiet offices, often surrounded by dictionaries and other reference materials. Or, at home. Translators also attend international conferences of all sorts, taking notes and doing secretarial jobs in several languages.
Full-time job options are rare and many of them work as freelancers; therefore, they may not enjoy job security and a steady source of income.

Courses
Foreign language courses can be studied after 10+2 as a 3-year graduate course or even as 5-year integrated language course in the universities offering such courses.
Some universities even offer diploma/certificate courses for graduates and post graduates. The other option is to pursue these courses at the institutes run by embassies and consulates. These institutes offer both basic and advanced level courses, some of them extending up to 5-6 years.
