Aeronautical / Aerospace Engineering : Aeronautical Engineering is all about design, construction and maintenance of all kinds of aircrafts, besides missiles and spacecrafts. It includes the study of fluid dynamics, material science, propulsion and electronics. Design and development constitutes the major thrust areas.

Courses
It is necessary to understand the difference between Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering. The former is the science and engineering of flying vehicles operating within the Earth’s atmosphere (usually aircrafts, helicopters), while aerospace engineering is the science and engineering of flying vehicles operating within and outside of the earth’s atmosphere (rockets, missiles, space station, space-shuttle, lunar or interplanetary probes)
The basic degree is a B.E.(Bachelor of Engineering) or a B. Tech (Bachelor of Technology). One can also acquire a diploma in Aeronautical Engineering offered by some polytechnic institutes.
Most of the reputed engineering colleges and the Indian Institute of Technology’s (NT) in India offer graduate and postgraduate degree courses in Aeronautical Engineering.
For example, the Department of Aerospace Engineering at NT Madras has excellent experimental and computational facilities and has been actively engaged in research funded by ISRO, DRDO, etc. The Department offers: B.Tech. (4 years/8 semesters), Dual Degree - B.Tech. & M.Tech. (5 years/10 semesters), M.Tech. (2 years/4 semesters), M.S.(Minimum 1 lh years), and Ph.D. (Minimum 2 years)

Eligibility
In order to pursue a B.E. or B.Tech course in aeronautical engineering, one needs to qualify the higher secondary examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics as compulsory subjects along with a good aggregate percentage.

Admission
It is mandatory to qualify in the Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE) which the NT’s conduct in January and May every year. Besides the NTs there are some other institutes which also conduct entrance examinations for the admission of students.

Ph.D. Admissions in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at IIT Bombay
Established in 1966-67 as the Department of Aeronautical Engineering, the department was renamed the Department of Aerospace Engineering in 1992. It runs strong undergraduate and graduate programs in aerospace engineering, and carries out research The Department, which enjoys a high reputation, offers the 4-year Ph.D. program beginning with an apt research-training program during the first year.

Admission procedure:

  1. Interaction/discussion with the faculty members in the areas of research the applicants wish to pursue.
  2. Objective type written test: It enables the department to assess the applicants’ basic engineering (relevant discipline) and mathematical skills.
  3.  Technical Interview: After the written test, a technical interview will be conducted. The duration of the interview will be 30 to 45 minutes. The applicants are expected to come prepared with the general engineering mathematics and the basic engineering subjects relevant to the area of research they have chosen. They must also be prepared to discuss with their Masters level work, with a good degree of clarity. Applicants should also be able to clearly articulate confidently their motivation for research as well as preference for research areas. The performance in the written test and interview will be considered for selection.
