(ক)  It was the fashion then in every house to keep caged birds. I hated this, and the worst thing of all to me was the call of a koel imprisoned in a cage in some house in the neighbourhood. Bouthakrun had acquired a Chinese shyama. From under its covering of cloth its sweet whistling rose continuously, a fountain of song. Besides this there were other birds of all kinds, and their cages hung in the west verandah.
